High-Quality Attic Insulation Services in Grimsby

Many homes in Grimsby have inadequate insulation. This costs homeowners money in terms of high-energy bills to keep the indoor environment warm in the winter and cool in the summer. At Niagara Roof Masters, we ensure proper attic insulation to improve your home’s energy efficiency and make significant energy bill savings.

      How does Attic Insulation Work?

When we insulate your attic, we create a thermal-resistant barrier that stops the outside temperature (or air) from seeping into your home through the attic. This thermal barrier also prevents the cool or warm air inside your house from escaping.

Therefore, an uninsulated attic can make your house feel colder in the winter months and warmer in the summer. To achieve and maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, your HVAC unit must work overtime, which could lead to increased heating and cooling costs. The good news is that Niagara Roof Masters can help install or upgrade your attic insulation to lower your monthly or annual energy costs.

Which Insulation Material is Right for Attics?

At Niagara Roof Masters, we work closely with Grimsby homeowners to assess different insulation types and recommend ones with a higher R-value for attics. R-value determines how well an insulation material can prevent heat loss. A higher value means better insulation performance.

Our team understands that the recommended R-value for attic insulation varies based on the local building codes and the area to be insulated. We’ll recommend the right materials to insulate your attic efficiently. Here are the common attic insulation materials and techniques that we may recommend for homeowners in Grimsby and the surrounding areas.

      Blown-in Insulation (Loose-Fill)

Also known as loose-fill, blow-in insulation is made of cellulose (recycled paper fiber) or fiberglass. During installation, our technicians spray or blow it into the attic walls with a machine. This type of insulation is ideal for hard-to-reach areas like your attic. We can also use it to top up existing attic insulation or fill wall cavities.

While you can easily rent a blowing machine and install blow-in insulation yourself, we often advise against DIY insulation installation. Remember, installation requires careful handling of the electrical wiring in the attic while ensuring proper ventilation. Our team can complete your blow-in insulation installation project at an affordable cost.

      Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is made of latex, polyurethane, or other chemicals mixed with gas. When applied (sprayed), it expands approximately 20 times the original volume of liquid. Its expansion properties make spray foam an excellent attic insulation material. Our team can easily apply it even in the hard-to-reach areas of your attic.

There are two types of spray foam insulation, open-cell and closed-cell foam insulation. Our team will work closely with you to ensure your attic has an efficient moisture barrier to prevent heat loss. When applied carefully, spray foam insulation can help address moisture-related issues in the attic, crawl space, walls, and your home’s roof.

      Fiberglass Insulation

Fiberglass is a fire-resistant material used in blow-in and batt insulation. It’s an affordable option compared to cellulose. However, it can lose its R-value when compressed during installation or exposed to extremely cold weather.

At Niagara Roof Masters, our team has the expertise to install fiberglass insulation carefully to maximize its efficiency. When we use it as part of the batt insulation, we don’t leave holes or gaps that could affect its effectiveness.

A batt is a pre-cut section of wool or fiberglass insulation designed for easy installation between frames, such as joists and studs. Our technicians may recommend this type of fiberglass insulation for ceilings, floors, attics, and walls. It can also be used for basement insulation.

      Cellulose Insulation

This is a thick paper-based insulation material that we blow-in during installation. Unlike fiberglass, compressing cellulose doesn’t affect its R-value and performs well even in extremely cold weather. Considering cellulose insulation is a ‘blow-in,’ it is ideal for filling wall cavities.

Cellulose insulation is also considered an environmentally friendly insulation material. That’s why we often recommend it to homeowners who want to minimize their carbon footprint.

What are the Benefits of Attic Insulation?

With our cost-effective attic insulation solutions, you can enjoy the following benefits of insulating your home’s attic space.

      Higher Energy Efficiency

A well-installed attic insulation creates a thermal barrier that prevents indoor (conditioned) air from escaping or entering your house. In the winter, efficient insulation helps retain warm air generated by your HVAC unit, keeping it within your home instead of escaping through cracks or the attic with poor insulation.

Similarly, proper insulation in the attic prevents hot air from the outdoor environment from seeping into your house. That means your HVAC unit can easily maintain a cooler indoor temperature. This efficiency level means your heating and cooling systems don’t need to overwork to maintain a balanced indoor temperature.

At Niagara Roof Masters, we aim to deliver properly insulated attics to prevent air leaks that could lower your property’s energy efficiency. That’s how we help property owners in Grimsby and across the Niagara region maximize their energy savings.

      Better Indoor Comfort

Efficient attic insulation limits temperature fluctuations between levels or rooms within your home. Considering proper insulation limits air leaks, your home’s upper and lower levels will maintain a consistent temperature. This balanced and consistent indoor temperature ensures better indoor comfort.

      Effective Moisture Regulation

Your attic insulation also regulates moisture levels in the attic space and upper levels of your house. When warm or moist air rises into the attic and comes into contact with a cooler surface, condensation can occur. This moisture buildup (due to condensation) can cause wood rot, mold or mildew growth, and structural damage to your roof.

Efficient attic insulation and proper ventilation can prevent condensation. At Niagara Roof Masters, we recommend and install insulation types that are resistant to moisture absorption and prevent condensation on the surface of the insulation materials. This can help keep your attic dry and prevent water damage to your roof.

      Improved Indoor Air Quality

In addition to temperature regulation, proper insulation in the attic can improve indoor air quality. If you have a poorly insulated or uninsulated attic, moisture can quickly build up in the attic, leading to mildew and mold growth. These toxic microorganisms thrive in dark and damp environments.

As they grow, they release pollutants like spores into the air, which then circulate throughout your home. These airborne contaminants can cause asthma, allergies, and other respiratory health issues. Common signs of poor indoor air quality include coughing, eye irritation, congestion, skin rashes, and wheezing.

      Upgrade Your Attic Insulation

If you suspect poor insulation in the attic may be affecting your indoor air quality, affecting your home’s energy efficiency, or causing condensation, contact us. Our certified insulation installers are available to assess your property’s attic and recommend the right insulation option. Remember, we aim to prevent energy loss by ensuring your attic insulation system meets the local building regulations.

What’s the Cost of Attic Insulation in Grimsby?

Attic insulation in Grimsby currently costs between $2.00 and $4.50 per square foot. The total cost of your project will depend on several factors, including the type of insulation, attic size, and the existing condition of your attic space. Considering each home is unique, we recommend that you request a personalized quote for a precise cost estimate.

Here are the estimated costs of different insulation materials.

Insulation Option Estimated Cost Per Square Foot
      Blown-in cellulose insulation $0.60 to $2.30
      Blown-in fiberglass insulation $0.50 to $1.10
Average cost of attic insulation $1.50 to $3.50
Labor costs up to $70 per hour

      If your attic’s existing insulation has a low R-value, more insulation materials will be needed to reach the recommended insulation level. Additional inches of insulation can increase both the volume (of the material) and installation time, which can significantly affect the total cost of your project.  Other factors that affect the cost of attic insulation in Grimsby include;

      Access to the Attic Space

Small or hard-to-reach attics make the entire insulation installation process and material delivery more challenging. Thus, extra labour time may be needed. This can raise the total cost of your insulation project. To avoid sudden price changes, we offer on-site assessment and cost estimate.

      Material Choice

Fiberglass insulation is generally more affordable than cellulose, while spray foam costs more but offers higher energy efficiency. The final price of your project will depend on your chosen material. Work with our team to assess the existing insulation and determine the best insulation material to install. Remember, a poor choice of insulation may not offer energy savings and or meet the local building codes.

      Attic Insulation Removal Cost

If the existing insulation must be removed, professional removal service with a sealed HEPA trailer averages $2.50 to $4.00 per square foot. This service includes safe bagging, transportation, and disposal at a Ministry-approved facility. We’ll ensure no dust or contaminants are spread into your home during the insulation removal process.

Other cost factors may include attic size, roof pitch, and local energy rebates (financial incentives). Steeper roofs may require additional safety measures, while homeowners in Grimsby can often offset costs through provincial energy-efficiency incentives.

      FAQs

What R-value is recommended for attic insulation in Grimsby, Ontario?

Attics in Grimsby homes generally need high R-values due to the cold winter weather. New insulation guidelines recommend around R-60 for attics as a common target for energy efficiency in many parts of Ontario. Our team will advise you on the right R-value for your attic.

Which insulation types are common for attics in Grimsby?

Common attic materials include blown-in cellulose, fiberglass batts, and spray foam insulation. Cellulose insulation is made of recycled materials and costs more than fiberglass insulation. Spray foam gives air sealing but is costlier than cellulose and fiberglass. Work with our technicians to compare different insulation materials and choose the right one for your attic.

Is attic air sealing necessary before adding insulation?

Yes. Air leaks can reduce insulation value. That’s why we first seal gaps around chimneys, vents, and attic hatches before we install attic insulation. Air sealing prevents loss of conditioned indoor air and lowers energy bills. At Niagara Roof Masters, we often combine sealing with insulation installation.

Does poor ventilation in the attic affect insulation performance?

Proper ventilation prevents moisture buildup that can reduce insulation effectiveness and cause mold growth. That’s why our technicians ensure soffit and ridge vents or similar systems are working efficiently before or during insulation upgrades.

How long does attic insulation last?

Good quality insulation can last decades if it stays dry and undisturbed. Blow-in cellulose and fiberglass can last for many years. We recommend getting your attic insulation inspected after suspected leaks, pest-related damage, or major roof upgrades. Any damaged sections should be replaced.

I had my roof replaced as well as the skylight in November 2018. I had consulted three other roofing companies in arriving at the decision to contract Niagara RoofMasters. I was impressed with the integrity of the company, best represented in my early consultations with Derek, through to completion of the work to follow up. I had the privilege of seeing work being done by Niagara RoofMasters on the homes of neighbours, as well as the quality of materials etc. I highly recommend the workmanship. All questions were responded to in a timely manner. The job was completed as promised and materials that made their way to the yard were picked up - even to extent of returning a second day just to walk through and ensure the yard was free of garbage or nails as best as possible. Was very pleased with this experience and would recommend!

Niagara roof Masters did a great job on our roof . We were quoted very quickly with a very detailed booklet with the supplies they would be using on the roof. Their quote was very reasonable with local competitors. They answered any questions I had before and after the installation. The staff were hardworking and friendly. I had recently recommend them to my Parents when they needed their roof done and they did a great job there as well. Great work everyone!

Top notch. Right from first contact via phone, to Derreck quoting job. The material and workmanship is excellent. Men are very respectful to property (we have a pool) and listened to any thoughts we had on our new roof. They even caulked an eavestrough that leaked at end cap.
